The only possiblility I see would be a bad power cable.

Or, a theory that they got a better display.

BUT, I found that the screen is fragile. It will sort of move when it's hit or something. Seems that previous owner was unhappy of his PC...

i sold my old 17" crt at a garage sale for $10 just to get rid of it when i got the lcd display. i wasn't using it, it was just here taking up space.

well the rain wouldn't really damage anything as long as its off and you let it dry out.
