Why is the minimum character limit there?

Re: Why is the minium charector limit even there?

I am not suggesting that you must go through a users posts. If anyone here (myself, but possibly others) report that a user is just trying to bump their post count, then that is when you should look through there recent posts.

It has nothing to do with people wanting to answer posts with short answers, but at the same time it should ilimate anyone who does not wish to contribute.

(Unrelated to the discussion, but I love the Chibi ninja that you have as your Avatar/Icon/ect iPwn)

Right... that's advocating a witch hunt.

For illustrations sake;

You have a group of ten 4/yr old kids. Half are boys, half girls. The teacher says "Alright kids, I really want to cut down on the number of boogers on our carpet, so if you see someone wiping boogers, tell me immediately!"

Well, simple psychology tells us that there are some very predictable results. You will end up with children who begin fabricating these things (not to say they are lying, but wrongly seeing an action as the target action). The teacher will end up with more false claims than legitimate.

That's what I meant; asking members to report other members for something subjective results in illegitimate claims and typically a bigger problem than the one you were trying to solve. Spam, foul language, porn... those are all pretty objective. Post bumping is very subjective.

Thanks

LOLOL - best example, ever

Interesting topic. And as noted we don't all agree about the need for the restriction. But this was one of the same reason we initially built the thanks tool - to avoid threads full of +1 type comments.

I am no longer sitting on the floor around here. I heard the carpet was gross. :whistling:

Re: Why is the minium charector limit even there?

I agree with your point, but is not a community that helps police its own not a decent community? I believe its a fair question. I mean, that is why the report button is there right? False reports should be treated as such, but my point still (I believe) stands.

Re: Why is the minium charector limit even there?

The act(s) of self governance are not what we're trying to avoid... my point is that if the claim is not truly a 'black and white' issue, you create a scenario where the policing by the community becomes counter-productive to the community itself. I'm not saying you shouldn't report posts... you should. I'm saying asking members to subjectively police is asking for more trouble than this character minimum. That's all.

Re: Why is the minium charector limit even there?

And that is fair. It come up to individuals and their report pattern as to how it should be handled, at least in my opinion. I am by no means trying to tell you how to run the forum, in fact far from it. But again, that is why the report button is there right?

Re: Why is the minium charector limit even there?

Oh, and yes I do agree that post bumping is subjective. But that is the point of the collective. If some person decides that post count is more important than content, then the community will notice. Yes it will eventually create a problem, but not one that cannot be solved with a few simple searches. If you get a flood of reports about someone misbehaving (do you not already?), then act as you see fit. That is what I would do.

I want to state again that I am not trying to do your job for you, just voicing a few open suggestions.

@Janet, I completely understand why no +1 button was added, and I am actually glad for that. Just to let you know.

OIf you get a flood of reports about someone misbehaving (do you not already?), then act as you see fit. That is what I would do.

Here's the problem with that though. Usually (not always but usually) the people caring more about post counts are children or "adult" children living with mom and dad. If it's bad enough where a ban is issued then they create many additional accounts (which is a perm. ban by default for all accounts), potentially try to take down our servers, spam it up and in other ways just don't act like decent human beings. That means we gotta keep banning the person over and over again, cleaning up their post-ban posts, if it's bad enough get the ISP involved and because we're awesome at what we do send a letter to the parents to say "your kid is doing this, your ISP has been notified any additional offences and you could lose your internet service".

Quite fun eh? So having a 10-character limit to prevent all that because people would get annoyed with constant "lols" is nice as it applies equally to everyone - even us site team members need to use 10 characters in all of our posts.

And just to clarify, the work I mentioned above is not only when people people go away for post-count bumping, I just used it as a painfully true example of how complicated and time consuming it can get if we have to deal with things after the fact.
