On the forum I modded members could actually DELETE their own threads and it never got out of hand.

The reason is because members were allowed to delete their own posts, if you deleted the first post the whole thread got deleted.

There was still a copy left there for moderators to view and "un delete" it just changed that post/thread to where members didnt see it anymore

That may be a good idea but members will keep locking there threads and they will be useful for pm box calls but then mods have to make them saying like stop posting spam and we lock them, then members might try to do that, a newb the other day, he put in his post thread locked and expected it to lock automatically, makes me laugh a little but come on this is the job for a fantastic team of moderators.
