The one site in particular that I moderate allows signatures and avaitars and has over 3,000 members. I don't think it would be as much of a problem as you think.

Its not really the size, or indeed the problems to edit if something goes wrong - it probably never would - the problem is that that forum is not a Computer Forum; my Forum allows that, Matt's Forum allows that, we've all seen Forums with over 6,000+ Members with Image Signitures and Custom Avatars - but they're not ComputerForums. David has a sort of thing here which is different in that its a clean cut environment; its not really an entertainment Forum, its for people who know nothing about Computers to ask for help.

Image Signitures and Custom Avatars would change that feeling, and turn it into a place than the simple folk who come on here merely to ask for help would not feel like they could ask anything. It would quickly become very elite and look like we're not approachable.

true

but maybe established members could have custom avatars, so new members would know that they could get good advice from them?

Its practically impossible to, without the proper and complete use of Reputations which we all know will never happen make a representation of the usefulness of a person.

Without implementing a complex Promotion System based simply on the call of the users to promote that user to the Higher Level. And that would involve all the mods having to heard users asking for Promotions, and users thinking that user deserves it and others claiming that user doesn't... and it will go on. Its good in theory though, but it would take ages to get used to.

Images in signatures can be annoying, and distract people from the actual text of the forum
here, here ... i couldn't agree more, i hate people who put porn and other such material in there sigs and avatars as you say it makes the forum look bad.
