If were worried about minors, can you lock a thread so only people a certain age can read it. That way if there's stuff minors shouldn't be seeing they won't be able to access it.

No, but you can make forum sections to only a member can view it.

And if you have to 13 (at least sign that you are) to become a member... SO that kind of eleminates the problem. Even if he is 12, and says hes 13, there isnt anything we can do about it.

there is a way you can have usergroups, on another forum i go to there is an adult off topic section, where topics inappropiate to be viewed by young age can be discussed.. on there, its limited to people 18 and over.. this can be implimented relativley easily, just like the moderator and admin usergroups only can view the staff lounge and spam archive, so you could have a section just for members over 18.. im not sure about this for here, but it can be implimented..

Yeah you can create a restricted usergroup you have to ask to join. It would be up to the person in charge of the usergroup to let you in. Then you attach the user group to a hidden forum. It's not real complicated but it's real time consuming to create.
But still you better have your COPPA ducks in a row. Law enforcement can ask to see your records. If a minor is knowingingly or unknowingly allowed in, your cajones will be up for grabs.
And knowing how COPPA works a lot of site owners and admins won't go with a hidden forum that sports adult material. Cause you just don't know who's lying and who is legit.

Maybe if they are little kids they should just stay away shoudlnt be on the internet shoudltn their parents be watching them

Anyone can over come this though. If someone really wanted to read that locked thread they can just go into the profile and change the age and then view it.

I don't think content should be filtered based on age. Age doesn't necessary directly reflect a maturity level, especially this day and age. If they have the capability to access the website, they should be allowed to see the information. That's what the internet is all about.

Frimon86 it doesn't work that way. A restricted user group is not set to automaticly let you in. The leader of the group has to review and admitt you. If it was automatic, it would be self defeating.
hypetech it has to be filtered by age. That's the way the law is set up.

There are some forums that have an over age forum, hidden from other members. They would ask you to join. Rather then you asking them.

The law is set up that way because we accept it. However lost the term has become in today's society, we are in a democracy. Laws can be changed if enough people oppose.
