Forum "Update"

Was that constructive at all?

Listen to your mustache, AR.
I don't think it's really about getting new sections or condensing, it's just a fresh new look and something different that may give people a second opinion about us rather than the first one they (most likely) got from big(ger) forums like OCN and such. Plus, it's always nice to have some change or reorganization.

And it's not really like we wouldn't "use" the fresh look or reorganization as it would be a forced change :p.

I just wish I knew more about vB as I'd love to help with any sort of basic labor that needs doing for any transition or change David plans to make (if any at all.)

I really don't see why we should change the forum around. If it's anything like the overclocking forum you all whined about getting and never use, it will be just a big waste of time and energy.

Maybe if the OverClocking forums was actually seen it would be used. Come on man, it's buried underneath 2 other forums. You have to go HW/SW -> Processors (although it does show right underneath processors on the HW/SW page).

I completely agree. I always forget that the subforums are even there. I'll go one or two days without checking my emails (I always subscribe to thread I post in) and then I'll be surprised when I see a reply because I don't check them other than from my email.

Maybe if the OverClocking forums was actually seen it would be used.
Huh. You must be logging into the wrong website then. Every time I click on "General Computer Hardware And Software" I can't help but see the overclocking forum. So it isn't on the front page, BFD. It's extremely easy to find yet still not used. It has a total of twelve threads. One of which I had to move from the General Computer Hardware And Software section today. . .

Have to agree with the Rooster here. We were promised scores and scores of new members flooding to and clogging up the server to sign up to CF once the new overclocking forum was opened. Whether having it on the front page makes a diff to how many people post in the remains to be seen and i am certainly not convinced. Pretty much all the members should know where it is by now and barely any post there and you really aren't going to get new members signing up to post in it when there are specialist forums out there dedicated to overclocking. So it is pie in the sky stuff and it will only ever remain a very small posting section. IMO....note the IMO as it is my opinion....but so far it is backed up by fact.

Pictures are worth a thousand words (and I suppose if you add any text in them it'd be more than a thousand ;)):

BTW, the "alive" date of the OC thread was guestimated to the best of my ability. I saw the earliest post at July 30th, I believe. Anything prior was moved there.

(Also for anyone wanting to know the math. I went by 6.5 years so it'd be an even number. So basically it would have been from Jan 1, '03 to July 1, '09...but I just did 365*6.5=2372 for a decent number to work with)

yeah all it proves is that you need to get out more IMO....note the IMO as it's my opinion.

^Let's keep it on topic.

Anyway, it proves that even though it's not on the frontpage, it's getting more hits than some forums that are on the frontpage, so maybe it would be worth bringing it forward.

Dude, your math can prove both points. It's clearly being seen where it is, so why does it need to be out front?

It's unbelievable how long it takes for suggestions to get implemented or even considered here.

AFAIK all suggestions are considered on their merits pretty much immediatly, this forum rearranging discussion has been ragging on for a long while now. and that's because nothing has been finalised or sorted, the very fact that there are three layouts proposed is a sure sign that there is no final conclusion.

The excuse always seems to be along the lines of "it could be abused by members" or "it'll take too much work". Some members of staff were so uptight about enabling custom avatars because people would be abusing the feature and posting inappropriate images.
I believe that I was one of the biggest neigh sayers with regards custom avatars and inappropriate images, and low and behold I was proved right, though we have of course got around that by approaching members and asking them to change inappropriate avatars.

And the "it'll be too much work" excuse, well, I have a job, a life, a daughter, other hobbies and interests as well as coming to a forum. I think that the "excuse" of not having enough time to sort forty six thousand threads to their correct destination is perfectly valid! although I did actually say in the staff lounge that if that were the only sticking point on this I'd move them myself.
but what's the point of me going over and above duties as a moderator, (moderating discussions and moving spam posts) if you end up thinking that we're all a bunch of lazy unhelpful good for nothings?

So far as discussing in private, the reason that I put forth my suggestion in private was simple, there were already two suggestions that had been tweaked many times, (none of which had what I feel was an appropriate method attached of how to do this), all seemed to say delete x,y,z without thinking that would loose thousands of posts etc... I put my suggestion forward in a private area because I had tried to amalgamate the suggestions that had already been put forward, but not start yet another debate on thread layout with a new and slightly tweaked version of two earlier suggested layouts.

that's my prerogative, if you want to discuss in private you could find ways to do that as well.

you do not need to delete peoples post when you PERSONALLY don't like it. I'm sorry that you feel you are always correct and that others should bow down.
it's not a case of bowing down, there's just no need for a separate thread discussing the same thing. especially if the only reason that it's needed is because people couldn't stay on track in the original thread!

perhaps if the entire post that I'd made had been quoted it might have been obvious why it was discussed more about than the solutions proposed here.
I'd gone to the trouble of trying to see what was wanted, what was lacking in the current arrangement, keeping the current forum asthetic and size (which I consider good), suggested what forums could be merged and deleted, and the order to do it in to make the work as smooth as possible, whilst also trying not to leave empty forums that'd look messy.

The idea that I proposed didn't get more attention because it was put in a special place, or because I'm some kind of godly creature around these parts, it's because of the way that it was put across.
