When we automerge it doesn't send a notification to the people subscribed to that thread, so sometimes they never look

So basically you want permission to be able to double post? That won't happen. If the automerge thing was removed and if you had something to add to a post then you would be required to use the edit button. That still would not make the post highlight. So therefore it would be no different.
