I've increased the limit to 100x100 and the size limit to 150k

Big avatars don't bother me in the least. The only good reason I can see for limiting them is if they adversely effect the running of the site. (Like eating up too much bandwidth and causing slowdowns, for example). If they aren't causing any real problems, then who cares?
