Default Ubuntu not detecting network

Ok I have never used linux before, the most I have done is setup iis on a windows server so you are going to have to bare with me. I cannot get ubuntu to detect my network, it says its not there, I have on board ethernet, I have posted this on other boards and was told to try eth0 up etc, etc and nothing worked. If someone could help me with this it would be much appreciated thanks.
