are you able to unplug the device and plug it back in? (though I assume you already tried this).

yea i've plugged in everything from a USB/Firewire HD to just a memory stick.

Everything looks good from Disk managment but thats as far as it goes.

its a file server

nobody touches it, it doesn't even have a keyboard or mouse hooked to it, all admin is done over term serve.
