Default Server Question

Ok I work as a estimator for a landscaping company
(www.versalandscape.com)
I am also the IT person there
We just purchased another conmputer for a server.
(via ebay)
comapq p 4 2.66 512ram
dvd drive, built in network card and build in video
40 gb & 300 gb hard drives
and using it as a print server
for office jet 2840 & (maybe the designjet 500)

now should i use a windows 2003 server? (active Directory?) or just use xp pro and sharing the 300 gb drive for host files? (also need ftp function to host files so people can download our plans and stuff)

we were looking to use remote desktop so the boss can use quickbooks while away,

we have tons of job pictures spreed between 3 computers
i have all the estimating info
I just need something more orginized and centeralized

let me know what you guys think?

i will post pics with our current setup.

I need to Add something

i am thinking this is the way to hook everythign up becasue all of the computers i've shown in the pictures are wireless EXCEPT THE SERVER (ran wire threw drop down roof

internet--------server-----netgear wireless--------= WIRELESS COMPUTERS 5 TOTAL

now would the server need 2 NICs? 1 for dsl modem other to hook into wireless router?
thanks vince

or mabe this way

internet------netgear wireless router----------wired cable to server
wireless to 5 computers

Wow! Looks a strange set up. But i am not used to small offices like this

Erm. I dont come from the US but the Router looks like a ADSL Netgear DG834GT. So why do you use a seperate modem?

If you are also sharing files between pc's i would reccomend going wired on all accounts. Also again im not sure but over here we have things like print servers where its a small conector and it connects the printer to the router so no need for a pc running all the time.

Looking at your printer it looks a big office one, you sure it isnt already network ready? Ability to plug into router via ethernet and just add the printer to each pc?

Yeah Windows 2003 looks like your best bet, it has unlimited client connections unlike XP which only has 10. Also, remember that you don't need Active Directory running in order to be able to run a Print Server, File Server, and FTP server.
