Default Server admins/ Network admins/ Desktop Support

Just curious, what software tools do you see as essentials to having in doing your jobs? Which ones do you use? I appreciate all recommendations. I know it depends on what one is trying to achieve. I am just looking for the best ones.

thx

OK...
for free tools my pretty essential list is

Wireshark (good call DJ!).
remote desktop (obviously)
W32Jwhois (http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/jwhois.htm)
putty (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/)
MS port query (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en)
getif (SNMP browser) (http://www.wtcs.org/snmp4tpc/getif.htm) (though SNMP walk might be more useful -I'm still trying to find the best).
wmi object browser (for browsing WMI and CIM) (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-F2ABDC3ED314)
Turbopad (notpad on acid context highlighting etc) (http://turbopad.sourceforge.net/)

for paid tools,
Visio is an essential item (for documentation).
Gadwin Print screen (http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/) -this is available for free, but when used in business should be paid for

It's funny that this post come up. I just slicked the Dell PowerEdge 2970 server today at work and reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows Server 2003 R2 64 Bit edition to make way for the "System Center Operation Manager 2007" deployment I am going to do. It's Microsofts predecessor to MOM 2005. I have looked into in and have evaluated what it can do and I am pretty impressed. It will give me a central location for monitoring everything in my environment from, all Security Logs from every server, to monitoring events logs, services, distrubuted applications such as Exchange, and SharePoint and any other Microsoft or Third-Party app. I can monitor SNMP devices as well such as switches, routers, pix firewalls, Client Machines and databases pretty much whatever. As for price point I couldn't tell you. The company I work for is a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner. Something to look into if you ever find yourself a System Administrator of a large spread out environment.

Server monitoring
Cacti - SNMP monitor
Dell open manage - Dell server managemnt
HP Sim - HP server managemnt
Spiceworks - Network inventory

Server administration
mRemote - remote desktop manager
Dell DRAC / HP ILO (remote server management) can manage a server even if no OS is installed, crashed, or in the bios. Kinda like a IP based KVM
Vmware 2.0 + VIC
WSUS
Enterprise GPMC

Troubleshooting
Wireshark
pstools
SNMPwalk
