Default newbie to servers, need advice.

hey everyone. I am considering making a small server with one on my older computers. I was doing some research and I came across this tutorial:
http://www.pcmech.com/byos/step/1

Do you think this would be a good setup for a small invision forum? I'm still confused about stuff thought, such as MySQL. do I have to get that somwhere in addition? well, hope you can help me out. Remember you gotta explain a lot of this in plain english cause I'm a complete Noob at servers
thanks guys!

dave as in dave the admin? he knows a lot about servers? Ok.
Another thing I'm wondering is about. CHMOD and permissions. If it is hosted on my comp. can I still set the permissions? you have to do that for a forum.
Sorry if these are stupid questions I just am totally new to servers.

Server setups rather easy on a home comp. simple to config Apache, mysql and php. Then install a forum, also for CHMODs just download an FTP server, one that allows users to connect to you pc. So you can connect with a FTP client that allows CHMOD'ing and do it all

okay, now It says on the tutorial to use a program called
filezilla, http://filezilla.sourceforge.net
Now you say I need an Ftp server. I currently have a program I use to upload/download from my current website host. I use WS_FTP Pro
but I don't think this is the same thing, So I was checking out this: http://www.ipswitch.com/products/ws_...ver/index.html
I was also thinking of using a uni.cc domain, but they say I need to use a program called reactor.exe
http://www.uni.cc/site/info_reactor.php
will I need all of these programs or is there a better way? will there be any conflict between them? or do they all work together? hmmm.

Um, you don't need to install an FTP server to chmod files. That doesn't even make any sense.

Forget the FTP server. Put linux on your server and read some documentation.

No no, its much simpler. FTP server. connect to it with a ftp cleint..chmod files. And allows other users access. And as for the server it will be dandy

Um, do you realize that permissions are stored on the local filesystem?

Installing an FTP server to change permissions makes about as much sense as using an FTP server and client to move files around on your local hard drive. Why not just do it directly?

FTP is for *remote* servers. When the server is sitting right there, you don't need FTP.

He can use the ftp for other uses too. And he may not know how to localy CHMOD. take a chill pill with comments dude. Its easiest way and gives more opertunitys to the server. But i recomending buying hosting from a proper server, ina datacenter etc.
