sourceforge has the best linux software, try getting soemthing from there! Thats where I load up my linux systems!

you could establish the VNC session through a secure tunnel... Now it's just as secure, and you are free to use the terminal (if thats your thing) and you can use the graphical programs you can't use over the command line session.
