I am running bt5 in virtual box, whenever I go to 'Setup & initialize Snort' a windows with 'Starting network detection system snort' written pops up for half a minute and then disappears....I haven't ran this setup even once before - this is my first time, so pls help....what should be done?

My experience with snort is that it runs in the background and writes to the system log. you'd need to check the logs to see if it's finding anything.
What are you trying to use it for?

I know nothing of these - So I was just tying to run Snort...(Basically I was following a tutorial, where it had initialized snort) and all that....BTW can you pls elaborate on it a bit -

It has been a while since I have used snort myself, but I would recommend that you have a look at Snort Manual. It will give you the most in depth information. If you want to know what snort is normally used for, I would use it for packet sniffing, and/or wireless intrusion.
