Just a general question about anti-virus...
Are they designed to protect your whole computer (several different partitions)? The reason I ask is because I was thinking about partitioning my hard drive and didn't know if it mattered which partition I put it on. Thanks

Usually you can select which partitions you want the AV software to scan. And yes, most AV software I've ever came across allows you to select the entire hard drive and even multiple drives.
