Re: Installing an OS on an old pc

Most of the distros will be freem but depending on the age of the hardware I'm not sure I would recommend Ubuntu or Suse. An older version of another distro might be better suited for older...

Re: What OS do you use currently?

I use Gentoo on my main PC. Nothing beats a custom system with a stripped out kernel for speed and smooth operations. Linux has much better memory allocation and no need to defrag... ever. It's my...

Re: Linux partitioning help

I'll guess you installed the OS...

Re: Uninstall GRUB?

If you have a windows boot cd, you can fix it using the command prompt there.

I believe just using the fixmbr command will do it.
Someone correct me if I am mistaken, as it has been years since...

Re: Linux partitioning help

First, which distro are you installing?
I'll guess due to its popularity of late you were using Ubuntu.
What was the error you received when trying to partition?
Ubuntu uses a version of...

Re: ubuntu install help!!!

Using linux, it does not matter which drive it is on, the bootloader, eaither grub or LILO will allow you to select any OS during boot. It would be the same if the OS were on a primary, slave or USB...

Re: ubuntu install help!!!

You do not need to use your master drive. You can use any partition on any drive to install linux.

Most versions come with gparted or some other partitioner which is on par with partition magic...

Re: Which linux to use?

As has been stated, let us know what you plan on using the computer for. That will make a big difference on what distribution to install.

Pretend you are buying a car. Lay out the features,...

Re: Ubuntu 7.04 and Wireless internet

Does your card appear in the Network Manager application?
If so, it should be fairly simple to configure it there, though the applet has a tendency to stutter and require a networking or full...

Re: Installing Linux

That is the most obviously false accusation I have seen in a while. There is no bylaw for a linux distros that the install must be complicated in order to be linux. Saying so is simply elitist...

Re: Linux X-server

Ubuntu uses sudo instead of actual root access, so you just need to type the command

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

then enter your user password

should be xorg unless it's a really old...

What command exactly are you typing to "access" the files. Are you trying to open them to edit them, or just go to the directory, or just display them?

To edit the files you might try, if you...

If you don't have one of those, you can download a knoppix cd image and boot from that to reformat the drive.

Either of these...

Re: 'Linux' - connectivity

yep, all linux operating systems use hotplug or something similar to detect new hardware upon booting the system. Knoppix uses only hotplug since it is a live cd, therefore all of your devices and...

I've had all kinds of trouble with that driver. You may do better to use ndiswrapper and the xp drivers. That was the only way I've gotten that card working. If you do get the rt2500 linux ones...
