If you're new to video editing then i suggest you get Ulead's VideoStudio. Pretty good and really easy to use. Once you get used to it, I would definately go for Sony Vegas. :)

Vista looked great and all on the surface, however, the requirements for all the fancy stuff are simply a bit too much for my computer. It would've been a great operating system if it worked well...

Gentoo is a really good distribution at the price of the ease of use. I'd probably go with something like Ubuntu, where it has had a lot of media in comparison to other flavours and probably more...
