is there a downfall to learning cpp as your first langauge???

no...

everyone has their own preferences, (usually linked to their goals).
the only downside i could imagine is that if you learn C afterwards you have to remember that there is no real concept of classes in c the same as there is in C++.

however, learning C++ will probably help you learn Java afterwards since you'll already be familliar with classes...

it's all apples and oranges really...
you should learn whatever is best to complete the goal you wish to accomplish.
