Default Software-based network management tools or an appliance

Hi, Im in charge of upgrading our current network administration techniques. Which do you think is better software-based network management tools or an appliance?

I just saw this commercial on youtube ( ) and that's totally me! Im tired of being the one that gets yelled at when the system is down!

I think we need quite a bit more information to help you with this.

However one thing that should be applied in almost any situation is SNMP based monitoring. Are you familar with what SNMP is?
