Default Router lag?

Sometimes, my friend comes over and we will play some games on my cable internet. Most of the time were playing cs. But anyways in some servers I will run at a constant 50ms ping on my computer and he will also, but when one of us joins the same server we both spike up to 1k ping and its impossible to play. I'm on a 3mb down/512 up internet, so I don't think bandwith is a problem for cs. My first instict is my router, and if I need to forward some ports or not. Anyways, anyone know the problem?

If I remember correctly you need to forward port 27015 for playing cs.
