Default Render farm ideas?

Well first off I want to say I have researched this and it just seems to be over my head a ways.

At work I set up a network between 2 Pcs and 2 macs, which was Hell.. but I got them to work with a linksys switch. It is still a pain for the macs to stay connected to the pcs though.

But I guess my question is this, we use the 3d software Modo, which has a network render controller built in. Which I got to work between all 4 computers actually, but it just still isn't fast enough.

So we got this idea to either build, or buy a render farm.

Does anyone have any good ideas to either buy or build a render farm?

Like I said, I researched this but I feel like every site it either out of date or saying something completely opposite of the other.

I would say our budget is around 2k but ti convince my boss I need proof of how it will be faster. We are currently breaking up the animations into chunks and rendering them out on all the computers.

Thanks for any insight,

Fenix
