new to networking

My stepmom has a laptop at her house, and i want to be able to access her computer from my house... probably 5 miles away...how would i be able to do that

The easiest way would be to use a service like logmein.com.

would i have to install it on one computer or both?

Using logmein you'd install a client on her computer which would run all the time, then you'd have a web browser open on your computer which would display and allow you to interact with her desktop.

There are "better" ways (as in more efficient, secure, open source and more flexible) but they can be tricky to set up and to get working properly. If you just want something you can download and use straight off logmein is probably your best option there.

I love logmein. Great little app. Works great. It has a free and a paid version. Make sure that once you get her computer setup you change the license to 'free' in the Web Browser part. It will default to a 30-day trial of the paid version.
