Networking o/s

My mate wants to know? "What type of o/s do i need to run a server. can i you ues normal o/s. eg win xp 98 etc"

You can use normal OS' to run services.

Windows 98 comes with personal web server
windows NT comes with IIS4
windows 2000 comes with IIS5
windows xp (pro) comes with IIS6
windows 2003 (server) comes with IIS6

both IIS5 and 6 come with FTP servers, though you can get these from pretty much anywhere anyway.

you can have apache run on any NT based machine, as well as any linux machine.

IIS6 comes with an SMTP server

You can use any OS for a server. Depends on what you want to do with it though can narrow your decision

what it is my friend has networked his home and is puting a server in. he wants to no if that his server has to be a run by an normal os or a networking one and that if he did do all the other pc have to be the same and etc.....
