Default networking with games

Currently im trying to LAN 2 computers and play counter strike source...it works but only about half, problem is sometimes ping will slowly spike up to 300 or so then go down and also when trying to connect to servers it doesnt want to establish connections sometimes then all of a suden it will connect fine,,, all these problems go away when i directly connect 1 comp to the modem. thanks for any help

Sounds like you have a router issue. There may be a firmware upgrade needed. Also, how long is the cables that you are connecting to the 2 LAN computers? They shouldn't be very long. First simple step, try power-cycling the router.
