Default Network cable is unplugged

I have an onboard ethernet adaptor and it's drivers are the latest I could find. Also, my device manager shows that there's no problems with the hardware. However, when i connect a lan cable (not cross over but normal cable) the lights of my ethernet card don't light up and i get 'Network cable is unplugged'...the on board lan is enabled in bios and i have tried several differnet wires and have tried reinstalling drivers... nothing seems to be working.. any suggestions???

If you have tried different "known good" cables and the lights aren't coming on, then it is the interface, regardless of what Device Manager says. Drivers won't matter as far as the link light coming on. In fact, on most systems, the link light will come on if you plug a cable in when the computer is powered down. Try installing a PCI Network Card, and disable your onboard adapter.
