depends on which country you live in and also various local bylaws which could come into play. some places can come down real hard on you, others say it's the wifi owners prob for not attempting to secure the access.

Only specific law I know of that 'regulates' wifi access is the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

However, if you're caught more than likely you will be charged with *unauthorized use of a wireless network* which is a violation of computer crime laws.

Now, (assuming companies) if you steal data from the network(sniffer), interupt the network/cause network down time (fragmentation attack)/(ddos), or download their whole database/steal trade secret information etc... dude they will make an example out of you.

and for the people from Florida like me http://www.clas.ufl.edu/docs/flcrimes/section2_1_1.html

cheers,

if you just connect to an unsecure network and view a few pages, maybe download some stuff it should be perfectly fine. firstly if its unsecure then theres a good chance they are noobish so wont even realise your on their network, 2ndly if they do find out they probs wont care or will put wep/wpa on the router, i doubt they will go to the police because someone stole less than 1% of their bandwidth, especially when a lot of people have unlimited.
