I am doing a custom-build router, probably using pfSense, but maybe Untangle. I need it to reach gigabit speed, or at least 900 Mbps minimum. Was planning to use Intel EXPI9402PT in the x16 PCI-e slot of a Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H-A motherboard, but someone on another forum said I need a Intel X540T2 NIC instead. I Would like a second opinion please!

I'm not entirely sure hardware wise but if you haven't already then take a look at some DIY router guides like this one, The Ars guide to building a Linux router from scratch and Numbers don't lie—it's time to build your own router
The first one was great. I also want to build a DIY router but don't have much time at this moment.
