Default Connecting two computers directly

I want to connect my two computers directly. One is running Winxp and the other win 98. My problem is that winxp NIC always always shows whenver i do ipconfig Media Disconnected. I have given it static IP address. Is my NIC not working and if it so ..is there a way to be sure of it.

Yes, it is very possible that the NIC isnt working. Try wiggling the cable a little or pushing and holding it in. Then try ipconfig. I have had problems with many NIC cards where the cable has to be in a certain position for the it to be connected. If that doesnt work and your NIC is a PCI device you can easily unplug it and try another slot or your other computer. If all fails you can purchase a $15 PCI NIC card.
