Connecting two computers

If I plug my laptop to my desktop computer using a crossover Ethernet cable to access the drives on my desktop, what would I have to do in order to access them? Do i have to map the drive in some way? Please advise.

You need to setup file sharing on the computer you want to share the drives from. Then connect to it from the 2nd computer by going to START>RUN and typing //IP ADDRESS or NAME OF 1st COMPUTER. Should be as easy as that.
