Here is my situation. My apartment rental includes free wifi which connects from the main modem/router via a switch. Can I connect another router to the switch, or even directly to the eternet cable to give me better connection? Is that even possible? Thanks!

Absolutely mate.

1. Grab yourself a nice wireless router (actually, doesn't have to be a router, could be a wireless access point as you don't need an ADSL or cable connection)
2. Plug your ethernet cable either into the back of the switch or wireless router.
3. Plug the other end of your cable into a port in the back of your router
4. Set your password etc

Provided there is no other network limitations in place to specifically stop you doing this, you'll have your very own personal wifi! If lots of people on the same connection are using the internet it will still slow down (same network), but range will definitely not be a problem.

joedaman, thank you very much. Will I need to access the primary router settings at all or will it be plug and play? I dont want to go through the landlord for this.
