Default Automatic backup to external hard drive

This is my first post and I'm not sure if this is the right section.

I want to set my laptop up to automatically back-up/sync on shutdown to an external hard drive so they can be accessed easily by other computers.

I'm guessing I'll need a router and hard drive, can anyone recommend any?

Also, what will I need to do on my laptop (windows 8.1) so it does it automatically. Is there a script I could write or something?

I don't want to use a cloud service as my internet connection is quite poor.
