Probably. But that seems like a long time to buy it for all in one go. How do you know you'll want it in 2011?

I don't really care except that it came to my attention because somebody asked me if one of my handles was fragment. When I asked why he showed me this post.

He left my name on the linux console info I copied from my comp.

There are other boards where that name has been taken also it seems that I get asked about that I am not a member of. That I can't do anything about.

This however I can clear up.

can you claim copyright on information left in the public domain?
you forgot about nslookup.
nslookup <<domain name>> gives you the same kind of information as dig does on linux. but on windows.
Name server lookup programs are surprisingly easy to write.
The reason you can't just maintain your own DNS server and expect everyone else to pay attention is what if everyone did that? it'd be anarchy.
For that reason there is a pecking order for DNS servers
root DNS level one.
there are about 15 of these in the world. they store all the information, your lesser (level two or three) take information from these servers inorder to update address lookup tables, the update scheme is one way so the root servers won't look at your address and decide that you must own that because you say you do.
