Default XP service packs

I just read something on Microsoft's web site that says updates will only be offered to customers who have XP service pack 1 or 2. When we tried to install SP 2 about a year ago, it totally screwed up our computer, blue screen errors, etc; we had to wipe the harddrive and reinstall windows..not eager to do that again If SP 2 messed up my computer that badly, is it likely that SP 1 does as well? It irritates me that they dont offer updates to non-SP 1/2 customers..

SP1 is fine. I think it's critical that your PC is spyware-free when you install SP2. But, to be on the safe side, install SP1 and manually install security updates from the site.
