Default XP on non bootable CD machine

ok guys ive got a problem

im using a very old compact pc its got 96 mb RAM and a celeron 300 Mhz processor it came with win 98 but half my stuff jus isnt compatible so i decided id put XP on it, but it doesnt have a CD dive in it and only 1 IDE cable and 1 IDE slot,

so what i tried is installing XP onto the hardrive and without installing n e of my drivers jus put it in that comp but it seems it doesnt want to boot it comes up safe mode normal etc but no matter what option i choose it jus sits on a black screen jus before the XP loading screen would usually b there,

ive waited like 10 mins and it doesnt move on, as i said tried all 3 safe modes tried last known good config normal mode and nothing will work.

did i do something wrong is there a better way to get XP onto that comp0uter ?

You do know what 1 IDE "slot" ALWAYS can handle 2 devices?

put the cd drive on the same ide channel as the hard drive, you can run 2 devices. You may want to slap some ram in there, xp is going to crawl with that amount of ram and the memory with thrash like crazy.

I hate to say I told you so on the just putting the hard drive into it. Windows can not locate many of your base system drivers and will not boot because of it likely. Hook up a cd drive and the hard drive to the same channel and install it that way.

Well, it had to have a cd drive at some point and time, windows 98 was a cd install. 95 was the last one that was installed on a floppy. So there must be some way to hook it up. Check your boot order and check your jumpers on your drives.

From all my previous installs when i've installed XP without any other software the system uses 91.5MB. It should do it.

bare minimum is 64mb to install, but I wouldn't count on it working well.

Ive installed XP on a machine with 64Mb and it did not work well at all. It was so sluggish and barely did anything.

As mentioned, even if you DO get it up and running, I have a system with 192MB of RAM and a Celeron at 433MHZ and the CPU maxes out just by looking at files in explorer let alone running JUST IE. I can imagine that 96MB of RAM and a 300MHZ celeron will act quite good as a paperweight :-P.

However, to help solve your problem, check your bios settings for boot devices and ide controllers and check back. You also want to make sure that your cd drive is one the master jumper and your hd is on slave or vice versa (which ever is fine), then set your boot to the CD drive, whether it be IDE 1 Slave or IDE 1 Master...which ever you set it as. Try all that and check back!

if you don't service pack the machine it'll likely run fine.

when I first started using XP it was on a machine just like is being talked about here, (only difference is it was 128MB ram) and it worked fine for years.

and i was still using that machine without problems whilst I was at uni, so I kept it fairly clean of random programs and stuff.

having a nice clean install meant that my crappy old 333MHz/128MB actually appeared to run faster than my brothers 1.6GHz/256MB computer that he had at the time, simply cause his was bogged down with crappy 'utilities' and such.

if you can't boot from a CD there is a six boot disc set available for XP.
just like how if you couldn't boot from a CD to install windows 98 or 95 there were boot floppies to get the machine started.

Wow, I don't think that is a computer that I'd want to be running xp on unless you upgrade the ram to something like 256mb. It'll use all your system resources then you won't have any left to run anything.
