Default XP install error

i have a 9-in-1 windows disk and am trying to instal windows xp pro corporate sp2 on an extra hard drive because vista 64 bit is awful. everytime i try to install it, it makes it through the boot from cd-rom setup, but when it restarts and boots from the hard drive, i get a fatal error after about 15 minutes. something about 'data error: cyclic redundancy check'. i tried going to the recovery console and running the chkdsk /r and it says it can't find the autocheck.exe. i did format the HD through the setup before all of this. the ting that i wrote down from the notes says 'D:\ROOT\XPPC\I386\asms'

please help i hate vista and apparently so do my computer components
