Default xdm and vncserver

i have gdm and xdm on my machine. neither is my default-display-manager because i've chosen not to have one (causes kernel to crash if i do). vncserver shows xdm and not gdm. at bootup of linux, gdm loads first, xdm loads second. i want vncserver to show gdm, not xdm. my guess is that it has to do with xdm loading second. what do i do?
