its taking the hardware beyond its stock speed....which will make it faster...yet make it run hotter and have a shorter life...

To put it simple, its like fine tuning to make it faster. Similar to what people do to their cars, but with computers

Overclocking aka OC is making the model's speed faster by increasing clocks.

Overclock with little incrments...so you won't end up not booting because of too high speeds!

Yep, if not done correctly it can ruin a good mobo or graphics card or CPU.

And cooling will play a big part in the OC-n. Proper ventalation of the system..ect.

If you are not too sure, there is always software that can sort of do it for you. I would recommend reading the overclocking guide here, and at the Overclockers' forum before attempting it.

You also have to have a proper mobo, which one do you have?

Well, if you got a preassembled computer the odds are that you will not be able to OC it.
