Question Wireless Internet Safety Question!?!

I am new to this wireless internet thing. I have my laptop, can connect, but I am wondering how safe these open wireless access points are. What can I do to protect myself from people getting on my pc. There are warning stating that these points are not encrypted and makes it available for others to see. I have the basics...anti-spyware...firewall..and anti-virus. Can anyone give me any more advice, or even some better anti-virus/anti-spyware/or firewall?
