you don't have to have SP1 before SP2, because service packs are cumulative...

telling the service pack installer to back up replaced files will be enough to let you roll back to a previous version.

I don't think system restore is good enough tool to traverse service pack installations.

you will need a food HDD restore for example Norton GoBack but as there are not go back points its a useless suggestion
