Default \windows\system32\config\system

I have a computer running windows xp. It doesn't start and says it due to either a corrupt or missing \windows\system32\config\system
and I should use the setup cd-rom to try and repair. I do thise and select the repair option, then it goes to dos prompt. I've located the file(s), but now what do I do?

Ok well, one thing, reapairing NEVER works, but if it does, you usually get an error popping up every 5 minutes or so. Your best bet is to reformat.

Yeah, but that still doesn't tell me what I'm suppose to do. Am I suppose to copy that directory somewhere or what. Is there a recovery program. Like I said, after I select the "R" option, it just takes me to dos. Don't know what to do after that.

just try reinstalling it over the other one to see if that will add the missing file.
