Default Windows not loading

Hello I am having a problem with XP SP3 on my computer. I was doing some things when it froze and I hit the restart button but when it rebooted it would hang up at the load screen and reboot again and keep rebooting. I can not get into windows trough any safe modes, last know configuration, starting windows normally. I tried to repair windows in the xp setup but the repair option is not there. I was reading about using the recovery console to recover corrupt registry. Or changing the boot drive using fixmbr/fixboot. I really dont want to reinstall windows that is a last ditch effort. I want to get into windows to at least back up my files. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.
