Default Windows Media Center question

I keep reading that WMC is the OS for entertainment...playing DVDs, MP3s and the such. So what does that mean excatly? If I have XP Home/Pro doesn't using Windvd or winamp do the same thing...or downloading any other program in that sense?
Am I missing something?

I respect your right to alt+F4.

windows media center just has everything integrated into the os for easier use and it has extra software and extra options for multimedia stuff.
When all else fails...Ham Radio!

I still have the same old HP DV9700T laptop I've had for years...still kickin'
