Default Windows 98 Backups

I have Partinoed By Hardrive so i can run windows 98 and xp.
But what has happend is that when I start windows 98 up it says:
"Windows 98 installing plug and play hardware"
And then it crashes.
I am using it to do some backups in 98 but it crashes i need it bad.
Can you suggest any idea's?

why don't you stick with xp instead of using both?

He might still use legacy hardware and/or might need it to play DOS games.

What's your system specs, to start?

Remember i am only doing backups on A OLD
Computer:
Specs:
Dell Insprion 1000
50GB Hardrive
256MB RAM
SiS M650 - AGP
Shared video memory (UMA)
Sound card
AC '97
Display type: * 15 in TFT active matrix

* Max Resolution
* 1024 x 768 ( XGA)

* Display (Projector) / Widescreen Display
* No
