Raid only works if both hdd's are the same size

That's not true, it just doesn't use the extra space of the larger drive.

When i tried running my 250gb and 500gb in raid it only read 500gb

Well, I currently have a 1TB and a 250GB, will this be a big issue?

Again you shouldn't but it will varry a bit based on the raid setup you choose. I've mixed and matched 1TB and 2TB in a RAID1 before without issue, just the extra space on the 2TB drive wasn't available to me
