Why 2 Program Files in Vista???

Why is there 2 program files in my new fresh installed Vista Ultimate 64bit ???

Program Files 509mb Date modified 11/2/2006
Program Files (x86) 526mb Date modified 5/6/2008

I noticed some programs that I install go to one folder and some to another... Like my NOD32 antivirus was installed to the x86 folder and Ventrillo (which is for 64bit) the default folder for it was regular program files folder...

Program Files is for 64-bit apps and x86 houses 32-bit apps...
