Most of the time it's attached to the heatsink. You'll see a lever on most boards, pull or push it and it will sort of pop off. the processor is right underneath.

Indeed, a picture will indicate us what type of heatsink/fan you have. Or, do you know what type of CPU socket it is?

You do know that you can't just mix and match components, right? They all have to be compatible with your motherboard.
