What upgrade would give me the best performance boost?

I currently run a pentium 4 3.2GHz computer with 2GB ddr2 667 mhz RAM,and a Nvidia 8600gt 256 mb video card.I don't have much money so don't tell me to upgrade my whole computer.But i have the following 2 choices.Upgrading my CPU to a intel core 2 duo 2.66Ghz with 3 Mb L2 cache,or upgrading my GPU to a Nvidia 9800gt 1Gb.
What would give me the best gaming performance boost?

Your processor seems like it would be the most dated and more beneficial thing to upgrade. Do you know what socket your motherboard is for your processor or the model no. of your motherboard?
