Why would they need to play a CD for school?!

Even so, an external CD drive can be had very cheap nowadays.
I just find that the extreme portability and ease of use, along with the price make them excellent for children.

The teacher could send out important files that each student needs to complete.

Why buy an external CD drive, when one could be included in a complete computer?

Fair point there.

However, I have never needed an optical drive for school. Generally, the teachers would give out any files through the web.

No matter what, it is going to be dfficult to find a decent pre-built for under $300.

USB CD drive? I'm not saying a netbook would be a GREAT computer for the purpose, but it would serve alright for the price.

Exactly.
The Eee 900a is a very simple bottom-line computer, but at $165 it is an excellent deal and will get the job done.

You're better off with a desktop.

Eeeewwwww....DELL....

Ebay can usually get a pretty good desktop fairly cheaper than buying from a store.

not bad, but you couldn't pay me to own an Acer right now.

I guess it is still a good computer though.

Ebay has Buyer protection.
If you get ripped, they pay it.
Just read the auction carefully.
