My own personal hell
On my new board there is a 4 pin power connector and I am trying to figure out exactly what it is for.
My mobo is an ECS A790GXM-AD3
It is not mentioned in the manual, and I don't have my CPU yet so I'm kinda clueless. My current theory is that its for a fan so I can control it.

Here's a pic

It's right next to a 3 pin, so thats why i think its for a fan.

I have the AM2+ version of this board and its not on that one.

It's an auxiliary power connector for running in Crossfire. It supplies the motherboard with more power to help with running a multiple video card setup.

The white connector is for power.

Darn it AR! You alway slip in just before me! I'll beat you some day! :D

That's my guess, too - that it's used to power the fan without needing an extra 4-pin on the PSU - and to monitor it.

EDIT: Oh, fail on my behalf.
